Outline of Final Research Achievements

In China the term “tonghua” is used to refer to fairy tales and lterally children’s tales .This term tonghua was borrowed from the Japanese ,in the first decade of the twentieth century. This study examined the articles in children's magazines during the late Qing period and early Republican era, and considered the establishment of the concept of “tonghua” in modern China. I found out many works were translated from Japanese. In the late Qing period many works of Iwaya Sazanami’s otogibanashi, and in early Republican era, many works of Mimei Ogawa’s dowa were translated from Japanese. Through this study revealed Mimei Ogawa’s dowa was noticed as the standerd of tonghua in modern China, and found out early works of Chinese children’s literature were heavily influenced by cultural contact with Japan and Japanese children’s literature.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
