Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The overall purpose of this research is to develop a set of tools in the form of pronunciation learning and practicing guides to help Japanese students in medicine and allied disciplines minimize interference from their mother tongue and thereby improve their ability to pronounce commonly used and advanced medical terms intelligibly. The research is to be conducted in three phases. Accordingly, in the first phase (fiscal year 2017), as outlined in the Research Plan in the approved KAKENHI application, a basic or level 1 guide was developed through the process of completing tasks 1-5. The developed level 1 guide is named Medical Pronunciation Practice Guide 1 (MPPG1) in order to more accurately reflect its content.
During the process of MPPG1 development, in its transitory stages, the researcher presented the guide at national and international scientific conferences and incorporated the feedback from colleagues as appropriate and applicable, in the final version of the guide. As one example, discussions with colleagues reinforced the researcher's own experience and observations from previous research in the field that for effectiveness of the guide, it was critical for the learners using it to fully comprehend its underlying principle and rationale. Hence, an easy to understand explanation of the MPPG1’s fundamental methodology and its necessity was included together with instructions aimed at the students for using the guide. A test trial of the completed MPPG1 is now in progress as part of the research plan for fiscal 2018 as outlined in the approved KAKENHI project.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
This research is progressing rather smoothly and as planned. As outlined above under Summary of Research Achievements, all steps of the approved KAKENHI research plan scheduled for fiscal year 2017 were completed and a satisfactory outcome obtained in the form of a fully developed MPPG1 together with easy to understand explanation of its underlying principle and rationale and instructions for use aimed at the students. Furthermore, the test trial of the guide has already begun as scheduled to be conducted in the second (fiscal year 2018) phase pf the project. There have been no delays or obstacles so far in carrying out the planned research and it is expected that the first test trial of MPPG1 will be completed as scheduled.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
As outlined above under Current Status, the test trial of the guide has already begun as scheduled to be conducted in the second phase (fiscal year 2018) of the project. The trial is to continue into the latter half of fiscal 2018. Based on the results of the trial, a level 2 guide or MPPG2 is planned to be developed which in turn would form the basis for planned research in fiscal 2019.

Causes of Carryover |
The incurring amount was actually to be used for attending an international conference (TESOL 2018) at the end of fiscal year 2017. However, the amount could not be used within the fiscal 2017 because the period of travel extended into the month of April, that is, fiscal year 2018 (the actual travel period was from March 26 to April 2). Thus, the usage of the incurring amount has already been determined and currently the accounting process is in progress to that effect.
