Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In FY 2022, the PI followed relevant literature, focusing, in particular, on immigration policy trends engendered by COVID-19 as they pertained to international student mobility. With regard to research activities, in parallel to FY 2021, due to the significant repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic on this research theme, the PI was limited to publicly reporting her findings at an invited lecture on Japan's immigration policy to the Nagoya University Law School. Here, she focused on the ramifications of COVID-19 vis-a-vis Japan's ability to continue to attract highly-skilled long-term residents.

The topic of 'monitoring mechanisms' in immigration revolves around the maintenance of an actual immigration policy. That being the case, COVID-19-related developments, spanning from FY 2020-2022, seriously hampered the progress of this research. Whilst the initial years witnessed moderate achievements, including an interview with the UK's Government Advisory Committee on Migration on the effects of BREXIT on managed migration, and a short contribution to『移民政策のフロンティア』, published by the Japan Association for Migration Policy Studies, in 2020-2022, the abrupt shift from 'managed migration' to 'no migration' not only severely diminished opportunities to conduct overseas surveys and meet counterparts, but also turned managed immigration policy on its head.

Despite several setbacks, the PI is currently writing a chapter on the nexus between managed immigration and higher education for the "Global Handbook of Migration and Japan", due to be published in 2024.
