Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the past year I have continued to follow the political machinations surrounding the process of actualizing Brexit as: 1) Prime Minister May failed to secure legislative passage of her deal and 2) Prime Minister Johnson was ultimately successful in getting his deal passed following the December 2019 general election. Such events form an integral part of the book mentioned below. I also observed the 2019 European elections and looked at their impact on the composition of the European Parliament which fed into an academic presentation and a book chapter. During the year, I gave a number of academic presentations on the continuing Brexit-saga. This included one outreach event for the public in Oita run by the Faculty of Economics. I have had two chapters published in a Japanese language textbooks: one on the issue of EU and ASEAN identity and the other on the outcome of the 2019 European elections. I also gave one presentation on Japanese party politics in March based on joint work with Prof. Ian Neary (Nissan Institute, University of Oxford). My primary focus in the past four months has been on completing a manuscript on Brexit with my co-author Prof. RIKIHISA Masayuki from Doshisha University. It should hopefully be published in October.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
I am generally happy with the progress that I made during the last academic year but a planned research visit to Brussels - where some key interviews had been arranged - had to be scrapped due to Covid-19.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
During this academic year, I plan to continue following the on-going negotiations between the UK and the EU as the December 31 2020 deadline to sort out the future trading relationship approaches. Once the Brexit book manuscript has been submitted, I am planning on writing a monograph on the European political parties. Unfortunately, an important international conference - Midwest Political Science Association (MPSA) - where my paper had been accepted (April 15, 2020) - was cancelled due to Covid-19. Another planned conference in August (European Association of Japanese Studies) where a joint paper proposal was accepted has also been postponed for a year.

Causes of Carryover |
The project has been carried over for an additional year in order to see-out the Brexit-saga which is scheduled to be completed on December 31, 2020. In addition, I had initially planned to utilize the carry-over funds to attend an international conference in mid-April 2020 in the USA. Unfortunately this was cancelled due to covid-19. I hope to be able to attend a similar event/undertake research interviews in Europe in February/March 2021.
