Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I visited the UK in June/July and November 2017 to deepen my existing and establishing new connections with scholars and research groups who work on governing cyberspace in general and the response to growing threats in cyberspace by governments and international institutions. I interviewed several scholars at UK universities and had first contacts with FCO, MOD and MOD-related organizations who work in cybersecurity I also interviewed Japanese scholars who work on the growing impact of threats to CII on government policies and the international cooperation of government and non-governmental bodies.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I successfully broadened my existing network and was able to get a much better insight of the constraints of existing methods to deal with cyber attacks in Japan, and the differences between Japan and the UK. Europe in general and the UK in particular, has a far better developed and larger network of scholars, research groups and organizations, PhD and MA programs, and practitioner than Japan. As far as the social science and IR research on the growing challenges in cyberspace is concerned, Japan seems like far behind Europe (and the USA). The PI sees the need to increase research into this field in Japan. There is still the need to broaden and deepen my understanding of the theoretical dimension to improve existing theoretical models.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In April 2018, I presented first research findings at the International Studies Association (ISA) Annual Meeting 2018 in San Francisco. In June and July 2018, I am going to return to the UK for interviews, and to attend lectures and a workshop at Oxford University and UCL. More research into the practical and technical cooperation between Japanese and EU/NATO bodies is needed.
