Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This fiscal year 2020 has been an important year, because the main research results have been published in two major philosophy journals. Moreover, adaptations in Japanese of those research results have been published as two book chapters. The article published in the journal 'Philosophy East & West' covers the core topic of this research project, that is the notion of mindfulness in Dzogchen according to Longchenpa's works. I have actually narrowed down my philological investigation on his Trilogy of Rest. Then the article published in the journal 'Asian Philosophy' takes a larger perspective and has articulated the notion of mindfulness according to the so-called three levels of wisdom (study, reflection, cultivation), but with the overarching perspective of Dzogchen.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

Due to the COVID crisis, some aspects have been slighly delayed. This is why I have decided to extend the period to one more year, so that the final research results, i.e. one last paper on Nyingma teachers after Longchenpa, especially Jigme Lingpa, will be published or at least accepted for publication. In this way, I will have published all the papers that were initially announced in the research plan.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Instead of one major workshop on mindfulness, I have organized several small workshops. I will continue this year by organizing two interdisciplinary 2-hour workshops on mindfulness. But the main objective of this year is to publish a paper on mindfulness in Dzogchen, according to one major Nyingma author after Longchenpa, that is Jigme Lingpa (1729/30-1792). This paper will be submitted to the international open access journal Religions. It will be a collaboration with Dr. Michael Sheehy from the University of Virginia, USA. The paper is entitled : "Mindfulness and Meta-Awareness in Dzogchen: Contemplative Advice from Jigme Lingpa". We will analyze and translate for the first time a brief advice (gtam) by Jigme Lingpa on this topic.

Causes of Carryover

There is only a small amount left, but it will be very useful to buy books in order to write the final paper of this project that is to be submitted this year, by September 30th to the journal Religions.
