恐竜類の脳や神経システムの形態解析及び鳥類への進化過程

Research Abstract

この研究の大きな目的は、恐竜がいかにして鳥類へ進化していったのかという過程を探るものである。今までは、体骨格の比較研究が主であったが、この研究では進化速度が遅いとされる、脳や神経の構造を研究することで、より"本来の"進化に近いシグナルをとらえることができると考えている。CT画像による解析や標本を比較することでこの研究を進めている。
アルゼンチンの首都ブエノスアイレスにある国立博物館とパタゴニア地方にある博物館、サンファン大学に訪問した。この訪問によって、アルゼンチン恐竜の外観からであるものの、脳幹観察が可能となった。三畳紀後期から発見されている最も原始的な恐竜類のエオラプトルやヘレラサウルスの脳幹や、白亜紀後期の地層から発見されている恐竜(ギガノトサウルス、アマルガサウルスやカルノタウルス)などの脳幹を観察した。これらの観察によって、恐竜類における大きな進化の流れが推測できる。これまで獣脚類の脳幹を主に見てきたが、今回で竜脚類の脳幹の多様性についても研究ができた。現在解析中ではあるが、当初考えられていた以上に脳や神経システムの構造は、恐竜によって異なっており、保守的な進化を行っていたか再検討する必要がある。また、その相違がどのような要因で起きたものなのかを恐竜の生態から追求する必要があることがわかった。
