Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching-learning process for studying life skills. To pursue this goal, a life-skill training program targeting decision making skills was conducted at elementary schools in Chiba. Decision making process was composed of four or six steps : 1. Intelligence Activity ((1) Define the problem in light of children's values, standards , goals and quality of life.) 2. Design Activity ((2) Set a deadline for solution.) 3. Choice Activity ((3) Identify alternatives,(4) Weigh alternatives,(5) Make a choice.) 4. Review Activity ((6) Make an action plan to implement and evaluate children's choice.) The basic teaching-learning process of life skills was composed of five stages ; instruction, modeling, practice, feedback, and fixing. In the instruction stage, children learned assertive scientific knowledge for acquiring the decision making skill and how to train. In the modeling stages, the decision making skill model was observed. In the practice stages, children used three kinds of work sheets developed for acquiring decision making skill. In the feedback stages, children learned they back ground information about positive reinforcement of decision making skill. In the fixing stages, a pledge-performing decision making was written by children about their everyday life. Self-efficacy elements were taken in the modeling, practice, and feedback. As the result of this study, it was shown that the teaching-learning process and work sheets developed for training the decision making skill, which was based on training in essential scientific selection of knowledge and on self-efficacy elements composed of five basic stages of life skills, evaluation of process, result, and follow up, was effective in improving children's Lifestyle.
