| Research Abstract |
This research project "Japanese and African Americans : Historical Aspects of Their Relations from World War II to Present" has examined important features of historical relations between Japan/Japanese and African America/African Americans in the context of Japan-US history after World War II. This project has revealed new or diverse aspects of relations in the last several decades, though there are some continuity seen between the pre-war and post-war periods. The project contains not only academic significance but also social meaning to promote mutual understanding between Japan and the US. Therefore, it has provided some basic frameworks of this topic for international academia.

[Remarks] 黒人研究の会・第55回全国大会「大会テーマ:アメリカ新大統領誕生の背景と意義を考える」(キャンパスプラザ京都、2009年6月27日-28日)の企画、運営責任者。本研究課題の「日米関係」や「日本人とアフリカ系アメリカ人の関係」と関連する内容を企画、実施。*古川哲史は黒人研究の会(Japan Black Studies Association)[1954年に神戸市外国語大学で創設された、Black Studiesの分野では世界でも古い歴史を持つ研究会。日本学術会議の協力学術研究団体]の第55回大会において、バラク・フセイン・オバマ大統領誕生(2009年1月)をテーマにした大会を事務局長として企画・運営。基調講演者(Fanon Che Wilkins)や大統領候補選挙からオバマ取材を続ける在米ジャーナリスト・特別発表者(佐藤美玲)の招聘、当日は総合司会やシンポジウムの司会・コメントなどを担当。(大会については、同研究会の会誌『黒人研究』79号、2010年3月刊に紹介あり。)
