| Research Abstract |
(Purpose) Breast reconstruction after mastectomy serves as an insurance indication from April, 2006, and it seems that the perform rate will be shown increasingly from now on. However, various issues have accumulated in breast reconstruction, and therefore, it seems important to understand the present medical status when exploring a future trend. Accordingly, a questionnaire survey for plastic surgeons and breast surgeons was carried out as a contribution to a future directivity because the trait and task become clear by grasping and quantifying the present status of breast reconstruction.
(Procedure) The questionnaire by mailing was carried out in January, 2007. The questionnaires were distributed to all certified facilities and teaching institutions of plastic surgery (322 facilities) and breast surgery (609 facilities) throughout the country. The questionnaire items were made about the state or the profile of a hospital, the actual status of breast carcinoma treatment, breast reconstruction, immediate and secondary breast reconstruction, and future breast reconstruction.
(Result) Replies to this questionnaire survey of plastic surgeons and breast surgeons were received from 212 out of 322 institutions and from 356 out of 609 institutions ; i.e., the reply rate were 65.8% and 58.5% respectively. The interest levels about the breast reconstruction of plastic surgeons and breast surgeons are 95.8% and 98%, respectively, and the height of them was shown. However, the interest level was not reflected in the perform rate.
(Discussion) This questionnaire survey was suggested that breast reconstruction is a very interesting field for plastic surgeons and breast surgeons, and there are many surgeons who think that they would like to carry it out. However, in order to perform it, it turned out that there are many difficulties. In order to overcome them, it was shown that the team health care of breast surgeons and plastic surgeons is the most important.
