| Research Abstract |
Background : Along with the life expectancy increasing, the concern with oral function has been growing. That is the reason why impaired oral function may play one of the important roles in elderly with relationship of degradation of Quality of Life, sign and symptoms of age-related diseases. However, it is difficult to diagnose oral function because that is determined a complex functional organ. For this reason, although studies have been made on partly analysis classified by age, there is little agreement on age-related change.
Method: We selected 8 methods optionally from prior studies that suggested age-related change of a part of oral function, the number of teeth, Community Periodontal Index (CPI), bite force, unstimulated saliva flow rate, stimulated saliva flow rate, evaluation of oral Candidiasis and Repetitive Saliva Swallowing Test (RSST): We evaluated these methods and the quality of life for 285 participants age from 22 to 90, and outcomes were submitted to a statistic evaluation (T test of Student) in order to analyze any possible significant differences (p<0.05).
Results: All results of 8 methods show significant age-related change (p<0.05). By subjective appearance, Low rate of saliva flow have a serious influence upon decline of the quality of life.
Conclusions : This study fixed the standard degree of total oral function classified by age. And there is considerable validity in these methods to diagnose aging of oral function.
