Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The following objectives were achieved:
In previous years I improved the algorithm used by the GstLAL gravitational-wave detection software such that when assessing the probability that a possible signal identified in the data might be real the detection system can incorporate knowledge of the abundances of different kinds of astrophysical sources of gravitational waves. For example it may make use of knowledge of the relative abundance of neutron star mergers to black hole mergers, and so on. In this year, this work was incorporated into the main detection pipeline and used in the searches for gravitational waves published the by LIGO Scientific Collaboration and Virgo Collaboration. This is being used in the on-going analysis of LIGO and Virgo's third science run, O3. In addition, during the year, preparations were completely for the use of this new feature with the Japanese KAGRA gravitational-wave detector.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Due to the pandemic, a major conference in the United States scheduled for March was cancelled. This led to a portion of the research funds being postponed.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The fellow will participate in the analysis of LIGO, Virgo and KAGRA data, searching the data for gravitational-wave signals from compact object mergers, as well as contribute improvements to other research projects within the group.
