Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
FIM (flow-induced motions) phenomenon was investigated experimentally around multi-column FOWT (floating offshore wind turbines). Different geometries were studied as spacing ratio and column section shape. The results showed the best configurations to avoid the low frequency and high amplitudes of the motions due to the flow around the system. Two main mechanisms were observed: VIM (vortex-induced motions) due to the vortex shedding and resonance; and galloping due to the instability phenomenon caused by the asymmetric incidence of the flow. From these results, it is possible to propose the best geometry regarding the FIM amplitudes and also investigate new suppression devices to mitigate the FIM. The experimental results were compared with CFD calculations. The comparison showed a good agreement between them. Therefore, it is possible to conclude that the CFD can be a useful tool for designing procedure.
