Outline of Final Research Achievements

Historical transition and regional characteristics of the cultural complex related to cattle and horses were clarified. The slaughter of juvenile animals and meat consumption existed in the Kofun period, when the influence of the continent remained. In contrast, after the medieval period, butchering sites were relocated to the outskirts of the city and meat consumption was not habitual in medieval castles. Such avoidance of beef and horse meat consumption and carcasses is characteristic of the livestock use in the Japanese archipelago, and this study has paved a way to archaeologically trace the formation process of such habit. Regarding the regional aspect, the transition of horse use, especially in the northern Tohoku region was clarified. In classic period, the area had more in common with the Kofun period Togoku region than the contemporaneous Togoku region, and it was assumed that the difference in historic relation with the central government was reflected in the use of horses.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
