Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Holographic 3d-displays using curved digital holographic screen were practically realized and tested successfully. The display system can successfully reconstruct a 3d-scene of size 10cm x 10cm x 5cm (depth). The following are the details 1) A digitally designed holographic screen of size 10cm x 10cm and 20c x 10cm were fabricated using a hologram printing technology. The printed hologram screen has 100x200 micro lenses each with a focal length of 2.15mm and size 1mm x 0.5mm. The hologram screen also had a horizontal curvature and virtual curvature function to compensate for the divergence from the projector. 2) Integral images were rendered from a computer modeled 3d-scene of size 10cm x 10 cm and depth of 5cm. The integral images were rendered in accordance with the specifications of digital hologram screen and GPU's were used for rendering at high speeds. A 200-frame movie was created from the animated 3d-scene. 3) The rendered integral images were projected using a commercially available 2D projector of resolution 4K x 2K pixels onto the hologram screen. The hologram screen converts the 2D integral images into 3D light fields. The viewer was able to observe the 3D-scene completely with a viewing angle of 10-degrees. The advantages of this systems are, a) This is a compact system that uses only a commercial projector and hologram screen and b) the curved nature of the display allows it to be used in a variety of environments for example, as a wind-shield display in a car.
