Outline of Annual Research Achievements

1)強結合電極を用いた水の光分解反応のさらなる高効率化を目指し、強結合電極の結合強度が反応効率に与える影響を検討した。酸化チタン/金フィルムによって構成されるナノ共振器上に従来の金ナノ粒子よりも振動子強度が大きな金-銀合金ナノ粒子を搭載すると、結合強度が著しく増大することを明らかにした。さらに、本合金強結合電極を光アノードとして水を電子源とする光電流の計測より光電変換効率を求めると、上枝ピーク付近では金ナノ粒子に比べて2.4倍増強することが示された。さらに、過渡吸収計測により金-銀合金ナノ粒子から酸化チタンへの電子注入効率が金ナノ粒子より増強されることを明らかにし、これが光電変換効率増強の一つの要因であることを示した。これらの知見は、強結合電極のさらなる性能向上のための設計に活用できる極めて有益な情報である。
2)我々は、n型半導体の酸化チタンを用いて光アノードとしての強結合電極の展開を図り、水の光酸化反応の高効率化を進めてきた。一方、水の還元による水素発生や、空中窒素固定によるアンモニア合成などは、より高い還元力を有する光カソードの構築が求められる。プラズモンを用いた光カソードも報告されているが、光電変換効率は(1/10000)%オーダーと極めて低い。そこで、p型半導体酸化ニッケル/白金フィルムによって構成されるナノ共振器上に金ナノ粒子を配置し、強結合電極の作製に成功した。これを光カソードとして水をプロトン源とする光電流を計測し、光電変換効率を求めたところピーク値が約0.2%となり従来のプラズモン光カソードに比べ約3桁増強できることを明らかにした。
3) 金ナノ粒子/酸化チタン/金フィルムからなる強結合基板を表面増強ラマン散乱計測に用いたところ、プラズモン間に量子コヒーレント相互作用が存在し、それによりラマン信号の空間的不均一性が大きく低減されることを見出した。

Reason

金-銀合金ナノ粒子とナノ共振器との強結合において結合強度が著しく増大し強結合の範疇を超え、「超強結合」を示すことを見出したこと、さらに超強結合電極を光アノードとすると、合金ナノ粒子から酸化チタンへの電子注入が増強され、光電変換効率が全可視波長域において金ナノ粒子を用いた強結合電極よりも大きくなることを見出したことは、これまでにない設計指針を得たことを意味しており、当初の計画以上の成果であると考える。
また、当初の研究計画にはなかった強結合の概念を光カソードへ展開することにも成功し、従来のプラズモンカソードを遙かに凌駕するプロトンの還元に基づく光電変換効率を達成した。これにより酸化チタンを用いて構築した光アノードとしての強結合電極では、その電極電位から高効率化が困難であると考えられる空中窒素固定によるアンモニア合成や、二酸化炭素の還元による再資源化などの高効率化に新たな道を拓いたことは当初の計画以上の成果と考える。
さらに、金ナノ粒子のプラズモンとナノ共振器との強結合を利用した光電極において、金ナノ粒子のプラズモン間にナノ共振器を介した量子コヒーレント相互作用が存在することを光電子顕微鏡を用いた近接場の空間分布計測から明らかにした。このことは強結合基板を用いた表面増強ラマン散乱の信号強度の空間的不均一性が大幅に低減される結果からも支持された。強結合電極においてプラズモン粒子間のコヒーレント相互作用がプラズモン粒子から酸化チタンへの電子注入効率を増強している直接的な実験事実や理論モデルなどを今後数多く示す必要はあるが、その端緒を見出したことは大きな成果であり、当初の研究計画以上の進展・成果であると考える。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

強結合電極を構成するナノ共振器を介して金ナノ粒子のプラズモン間に量子コヒーレント相互作用が存在することが明らかにされつつあり、本相互作用が金ナノ粒子から酸化チタンへの電子注入メカニズムにどのように関与するかを明らかにする。メカニズムの解明のために、酸化チタン/金フィルムによって構成されるファブリ・ペローナノ共振器上に電子線リソグラフィにより精緻な金ナノディスク構造を形成させ、そのプラズモン共鳴とナノ共振器とのモード強結合を形成させる。さらに、金ナノディスクの数密度を変化させて、コヒーレントエリア内において量子コヒーレント相互作用に関与する金ナノディスク数を変え、金ナノディスクから酸化チタンへの電子移動がどのように変化するかを過渡吸収計測から明らかにする。また、これらプラズモン間の量子コヒーレント相互作用、およびそれによる電子移動反応の増強に関して理論的なモデルを適用し、メカニズムの解明を試みる。さらに、得られた研究成果を用いて強結合電極の最適化を図る。また、p型半導体である酸化ニッケルを用いた光カソードに関しても水の分解効率向上に有効であることを明らかにしており、その結果をさらに発展させて強結合光カソードの最適化も進める。
これらに加えて、コヒーレントエリア内の金ナノディスクの数密度を変えて時間分解光電子顕微鏡による位相緩和時間の計測や、ラマン散乱計測による水の酸化反応中間体の捕捉を進め、強結合、および超強結合状態における電子移動に関する学理を解明する。
