Outline of Final Research Achievements

With regard to the Shandong Kyoden wrote Chushinsuikoden there have been many prior studies to date showing its relationship to the so-called Shuihuzhuan of the original text, and to the carved, popularized, and Tanghua dictionaries. The present study shows that the Kyoden was written with reference to the vernacular translation of the Kana tehon Chushingura , the Chushingura-engi and verifies that the Chushingura-engi , was directly involved in theestablishment of the Chushinsuikoden. At the time of Kyoden's conceptualization of the Chushinsuikoden, he had access to ruri's vernacular translation of the Chushingura-engi which is why it can be said that the two heterogeneous texts, the Japanese ruri and theChinese vernacular novel Shuihuzhuan were able to combine without reluctance, both in terms of style and content. And it is also clear that Kyoden also utilized the Tanghua dictionary, Chuka zokugoso .

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

白話訳された『忠臣蔵演義』を『忠臣水滸伝』の中で再度和訳しつつ利用するという京伝の手法は、例の見ない新奇のものであった。京伝が齎したのは、一つは長編小説の枠組みであり、もう一つは新しい文体であろう。日本の浄瑠璃作品を中国白話に訳す、という行為自体の意味について、従来、長崎に来航する清人のために作られたと言われてきた。ただ写本の『忠臣蔵演義』に訓点を付し、漢詩を追加するなどしたうえで、清人に仮託して刊行された『忠臣庫』や、その改題再刊本『海外奇談』、さらには『日本忠臣庫』などと改題を重ねながら、明治に入っても、続々と刊行されていた事情をふまえると、日本人作白話小説の意味を再検討する必要があろう。
