Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this research project, I made public the characteristics of politics and melancholy in royalist poetry and songbooks under the Interregnum (1649-1660) were made public through oral presentations and papers. The two main research results are ‘Pastoral and Mythical Chloris in Miscellanies and Song Books during the English Civil War and Commonwealth’, presented as a chapter in a co-authored book, and the article ‘The Melancholic Royalist to His Love: Richard Lovelace’s Lucasta’. In both essays, the reception of love poems written by royalist poets in printed books and manuscripts made it clear that they were read politically as works of allegiance to the king or queen. Also, the latter analysed Lovelace’s loyalty to King Charles I, who was absent due to the English Civil War, in terms of love melancholy expressed in his poems.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

従来の初期近代イギリス文学研究ではあまり重視されてこなかった、共和制下における王党派の詩集および歌集に注目することで、王党派の韻文がどのように流通し、受容されていたかを考察した。手稿における王党派の詩の受容を考察した結果、共和制下においては恋愛詩が政治的な抵抗手段として大きな役割を担っていることが明らかになった。恋愛詩は共和制以前の記憶を喚起しながら、手稿の上で繰り返し再生産され、さらに歌集としても流布し、抑圧された娯楽を紙上で再現した。さらに、リチャード・ラヴレースの詩に見られるように、不在の国王を恋人として呼びかける詩群からは、愛のメランコリー気質を持った語り手の姿が浮き彫りになっている。
