Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study clarifies the "northern" characteristics of the poetry collection "Les Fleurs du Mal" written by the 19th century French poet Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867). In his art criticism "The Salon of 1846," Baudelaire states that Romanticism is a modern art and an art of the "northern," and by analyzing the contents of each part, it is proven that this argument is also incorporated in his main work, the poetry collection "Les Fleurs du Mal." In addition, the relationship with writers who influenced Baudelaire in the first half of the 19th century, E.T.A Hoffmann and Auguste Barbier, is also analyzed from a "northern" perspective.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

ボードレールの生きた十九世紀ヨーロッパは、産業革命と科学技術の進歩により社会における個人の生の意義が大きく問われる時代であった。ボードレールにおける「北方」性とは、この世の多様性の中で自らのかけがえのない個性と運命を自覚し、それに基づく精神的な進歩において自らの理想を求めようとする態度を表すものである。グローバリゼーションによって世界の多様性の意義が失われつつある現代において、さらにインターネットによって個人が匿名化していく現在の社会のなかで、ボードレールの態度は人間一人一人の生と精神性の意義をもう一度問い直し、人間性を回復する示唆を与えてくれるものである。
