Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The focus in this Year 1 of the research programme has been on two main research goals. The first of these, a statistical analysis of the Apophony Database, compiled and now completed by an overseas collaborator, has proceeded in a positive direction. Analyses have been carried out on the phonological, suprasegmental and length effects of both the first and second elements in the relevant compounds. An analysis of redundancy (the rate of co-occurrence of apophony and rendaku) has also made excellent progress. The second main research goal, the nonce apophony compound survey, was begun ahead of time (it was decided to carry out the survey prior to the results of the grant being known). A statistical analysis of this survey has also begun. Like the Apophony Database, the analysis will encompass the phonological, suprasegmental and length effects of both the first and second elements in the relevand compounds.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Research Goal 1, an analysis of the redundancy of apophony, is complete, as proposed. Preparation for an interim presentation in Year 2 was begun at the very end of Year 1. Research Goal 2, an analysis of the predicatability of apophony, is also complete, as proposed. Preparation for an interim presentation in Year 2 was also begun at the very end of Year 1. The survey required for Research Goal, the nonce apophony compound survey, has been carried out, the data collated, and a statistical analysis carried out. This is ahead of schedule. As such, an interim presentation will be given in Year Two, supplemental to the originally envisaged research timetable. The reasons for the reasearch having progressed more smoothly than initially planned are: (a) more input from the overseas collaborator than envisaged; (b) more effort available than expected.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In Year 2, interim presentations will be given on Research Goals 1 and 2 (analyses of the predicatability of apophony, and its redundancy vis-a-vis rendaku) at the Phonological Society of Japan conference in Tokyo in August 2019 and at a major phonology conference in Paris in September 2019 (presentation to be given by the overseas collaborator). An interim presentation will be given on Research Goal 3 (the nonce apophony compound survey) at the European Association for Japanese Studies conference at Tsukuba University in September 2019. At the same time, work will continue on fine-tuning yet further the statistical analyses, with focus on accent patterns, an interesting finding of our work in Year 1. Work will also begin on preparing two papers for publication, eith in Year 3 of the programme, or shortly after the funding period has ended.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Because work proceeded more quickly than expected on both the major statistical analyses, there was no necessity to hold a meeting with the international collaborator, saving a substantial amount of money. It is envisaged that the monies saved from this in Year 1 will be used in Year 2 towards travel expenses for interim presentations at various conferences.
