Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During this first year, I first researched innovative data collection methods (e.g. wearable cameras) to supplement previous traditional methods (e.g. blue-tooth-based audio for group videos shot at a distance). Data collection (to supplement previous collections) was done and preliminary sorting into batches is commencing. As this is meant to provide an additional database of transcribed spoken ELF interactions to supplement the pioneering work of VOICE (Vienna-Oxford International Corpus of English) I needed to develop a deeper understanding of the obstacles to audible data collection. Also, continued to deepen my reading and understanding of English Lingua Franca (ELF) in negotiation-style interactions.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
With reference to the data collection methodology, the project members experienced some small (but not fatal) complications. The first was that not all wearable devices release the audio capabilities (video only). It was found that devices packaged in the US disable audio whereas those sent directly from Asian manufacturers keep audio capabilities intact. This was not directly stated on the product information and only discovered after purchase. So as a result we will continue data collection (to supplement previously collected data) and will delay slightly the onset of transcription and analysis. Also, as transcription is a very time-consuming and intense procedure, it was necessary to find suitable research assistants with the language capability to assist in the transcription process.Such assistants are rare.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
For the balance of this year and early next, we will collect more data, organize the raw data into batches, design the proper annotations scheme and continue with transcription. Preliminary analyses will start. Also, we plan to hold a conference in June to share some preliminary findings and to network with other MUN researchers regarding the communication phases in MUN preparation and simulation events. We will also produce a publication related to MUN preparations and communication "best practices" as a result of the previously mentioned conference.

Causes of Carryover |
The initial expenditure plan had to be revised since we encountered obstacles in data collection (described earlier) this means the cost of transcription services will be delayed to this coming year. Furthermore, we anticipate a need for other data-collection and research reporting related travel so decided to move some funds forward.
