Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
We aimed to investigate L2 writers' use of evaluative language in arguing essay genres in CLIL-based (Content and Language Integrated Learning) English medium world history courses. We planned to analyze L2 university students’ use of key discourse features of the Discussion, Exposition, and Challenge essays using the pedagogical analytic framework we developed. With the valuable feedback on our analytical methods at an International SFL conference in Tunisia (Myskow, 2023), we have considered the pedagogical use of our conceptual, heuristic tool to help learners navigate the complex discourse and detect the ways readers are positioned by writers (overtly and covertly) to take up particular viewpoints.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
We have considered writing a proposal for a book chapter based on the analysis and discussion we have made so far. However, more textual and questionnaire data need to be analyzed to obtain profound findings and pedagogical implications.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In our final year, we plan to write a paper based on our analysis and conceptualization using the analytical and pedagogical framework.
|
Causes of Carryover |
We planned to present our paper at international conferences but could not make it due to the scheduling. Therefore, we plan to present at future conferences. KAKENHI will be used for travel and participation expenses for presentations at domestic and international conferences.
