| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This research project examines American and Chinese occupation policies in postwar Japan and Taiwan, focusing on outstanding issues related to the vestiges of Japanese colonialism. During the third year, I analyzed archival sources that I collected during the previous two years of research. Specifically, I read through a collection of historical documents regarding the recovery of Chinese nationality for Taiwanese people after the Sino-Japanese War. These documents written in Chinese include inter-departmental correspondence among various Chinese government agencies, as well as individual petitions filed to the Executive Office of the Taiwan Provincial Administration. In addition, I read through another collection of documents regarding the recovery of Chinese names for Taiwanese who had adopted Japanese names before 1945. These also include government documents and individual petitions. I gave a presentation on my research project at the annual conference for the Association of Asian Studies in Asia, which was held online.

Reason
My research project was progressing smoothly towards the objectives outlined in my original proposal until the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. Specifically, I have been unable to travel to the United States, as originally planned, in order to conduct archival research on US policies towards postcolonial Taiwan.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the coming year, I will continue to read and analyze the vast amount of archival sources I have collected. If I am still unable to travel to the United States, I may have to restrict my research to the Chinese decolonization of Taiwan. I hope to disseminate my research findings by publishing a monograph.

| Causes of Carryover |
I had originally planned to make a research trip to the United States of America in FY 2020, but was unable to travel overseas, due to the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Therefore, I plan to allocate the leftover funding from FY 2020 to FY 2021 in order to conduct archival research in Washington, D.C., Virginia, and California as soon as health conditions become safe enough to travel again.
