Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This research project examines American and Chinese occupation policies in postwar Japan and Taiwan, focusing on outstanding issues related to the vestiges of Japanese colonialism. In FY 2021, I continued to analyze archival sources that I collected during the first two years of this research project. Specifically, I read through a collection of historical documents regarding the recovery of Chinese names for Taiwanese people who had adopted Japanese names before 1945. The documents written in Mandarin Chinese include inter-departmental correspondence among various Chinese government agencies, as well as individual petitions filed to the Executive Office of the Taiwan Provincial Administration. This material serves as the basis for an article I am writing for publication.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
My research project was progressing smoothly towards the objectives outlined in my original proposal until the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. As a result, I have been unable to travel to the United States, as originally planned, in order to conduct archival research on US policies towards postcolonial Taiwan.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
During FY 2022, I will continue to read and analyze the vast amount of archival sources that I have collected from Taipei and Tokyo. If I am still unable to travel to the United States, I may have to restrict my research to the decolonization of Taiwan with a focus on how Chinese policies affected Taiwanese people. I plan to disseminate my research findings by publishing an academic article.
|
Causes of Carryover |
I had originally planned to make a research trip to the United States of America in FY 2020, then in FY 2021, but was unable to travel overseas for two years, due to the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Therefore, I plan to allocate the remaining funding from FY 2021 to FY 2022 in order to conduct archival research in Washington, D.C., Virginia, and California as soon as health conditions become safe enough to travel again.
