Outline of Final Research Achievements

The so-called "Arab Spring" that emerged after the end of 2010 exposed the fragility of the "illiberal hegemonic order" that had been maintained under the "complicity" of the U.S. and pro-U.S. authoritarian Arab regimes, and the fact that the U.S. already lacks the will and power to continue to exert hegemonic influence in the Middle East.
Then, what kind of new regional order is emerging in the Middle East? This study focuses mainly on the Persian Gulf region after the Arab Spring, and aims to find an answer to the question, "What role do extraterritorial powers play in the formation of the regional order in the Middle East?

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

中東は我が国にとってもきわめて重要な地域である。第一に、ペルシャ湾岸地域には世界全体の原油確認埋蔵量の約半分が眠っているとされ（2017年時点）、我が国は同地域に石油・天然ガスのほとんどを依存している。第二に、中東地域は地政学的な意味で激動の国際政治において焦点となることが多く、この地域の政治情勢に通じていないと外交的な駆け引きにきわめて不利になる。こうしたことから、中東地域秩序を正面から研究し、そのダイナミズムの一端を明らかにした本研究は大きな学術的・社会的意義を有する。
