Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In the past year, we did the following:
1) We planned and implemented regular participatory game design meetings with students and other stake-holders. 2) We made a basic prototype for one new sustainability-focused game. 3) We began designing two new games focused on local sustainability. One of these games relates to local examples "sites of sustainability" that exemplify the global sustainability development goals. The second is an historical game related to sustainable forestry, flood control, and commerce along a local river. 4) We published preliminary findings related to our project in an international peer-reviewed journal. 5) We presented about our project at a university conference 5) We published about our project in a university conference proceedings booklet.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Our research is progressing smoothly thanks to the cooperative work of the researchers on our team.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In the coming year we plan to make progress on our three game designs and hold several open participatory game design events. We are currently planning the type of data we would like to collect at such events, and we are refining our planned analytic approach. We plan to publish our findings in the coming year, if possible, though right now our focus is on collecting good data that we will be able to analyze to create knowledge for public consumption.

Causes of Carryover

We are still ramping up our game design work. In the first year of our grant we incurred costs related to establishing our research workflow, including games that we studied. However, as only one of our members traveled to a related conference, we did not incur high travel costs. However next year, we will be beginning to actually produce our games, which will require additional materials costs. We also may travel to learn and network in our field and also perhaps to present preliminary results of our research.
