Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The types of coop being promoted in developing countries are those that are compatible with global agro-food markets. According to the dominant narrative, this will lead to win-win outcomes for smallholder farmers and transnational buyers. Despite the renewed interest in coops, it has received little attention in the literature on agrarian transformation. This research seeks to understand how the agribusiness cooperative model is being promoted and accepted as an ideal type in a way that undermines smallholder farmers’ struggle for autonomy, which is often one of the main reasons for creating or joining a coop, as they are drawn into new relations of dependency.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The research focuses on the case of vanilla cooperatives in Madagascar where there has been a recent rise in arrangements between cooperatives and international buyers. Results of the 2019 fieldwork were published in the Japanese Journal of Agricultural Economics in March 2021. I could not carry out fieldwork in 2020 but additional fieldwork is tentatively planned for 2021.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Collect and analyze supplementary qualitative field data in Madagascar. Present findings at conferences and seminars.

Causes of Carryover

Fieldwork planned in 2020 is postponed for 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. If it is still impossible to travel in 2021, field researchers based in Madagascar will be contracted to collect data.
