Outline of Final Research Achievements

Prolactin and growth hormone promote angiogenesis through direct and indirect action on vascular endothelial cells, whereas they have reverse effect in various pathophysiological conditions via proteolytic cleavage by Cathepsin D and bone morphogenetic protein 1 (BMP-1). In this research, angiogenesis in pituitary adenoma is analyzed with special focus on these molecules.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

機能性下垂体腺腫、特に成長ホルモン(GH)や副腎皮質刺激ホルモン(ACTH)産生下垂体腺腫、さらには悪性度が極めて高く生命予後が不良である下垂体癌に対する薬物治療はいまだ困難である。下垂体腺腫においても腺腫への血流は重要であり、血管形成の機序の解明が病態を明らかにしその治療につながると考えられる。この観点より、本研究では、下垂体腺腫における血管構築に焦点をあて、血管構築に関する新規の分子の役割と発現を検討し、血管構築に関する新規の分子の制御を通じた、新規治療法の確立を探求した。
