Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In this phase of the research project, I have focussed on amassing information on entr’acte entertainment during the era I have termed loosely as Thomas Betterton’s age. Plays that I have analyzed for this period include but are not limited to: Thomas D’urfey’s Don Quixote (1694), the Restoration revival of John Fletcher’s The Pilgrim (1700), and Nathaniel Lee’s Theodosius (1680). Some of the secondary sources that have been integral to this phase of the research project are Peter Holman’s Four and Twenty Fiddlers (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1993); Andrew Walking’s Masque and Opera in England, 1656-1688 (New York: Routledge, 2017); Curtis A. Price’s “Music as Drama”, The London Theatre World, 1660-1800, ed. Robert D. Hume (Carbondale: Southern Illinois University Press, 1980); and Judith Milhous’s Thomas Betterton and the Management of Lincoln’s Inn Fields: 1695-1708 (Carbondale: Southern Illinois University Press, 1979). I am currently preparing an article on entr’acte entertainment during the Restoration period which would combine the research outcomes of the past two years.
