Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year I have largely focused upon building up my network, acquiring primary and secondary materials and preparing for my upcoming sabbatical/primary data capture period in the UK from September 2019. I have acquired a large amount of secondary source material and have conducted scoping visits to two archives and made contact with others in order to facilitate my visits later this year and next year. My current approach is to focus the research leading to the monograph on the British garrison of Yokohama during the Bakumatsu and early Meiji eras and to look to initially cover the other areas of the project through the edited volume.
In AY 2018 I published two reviews and presented my research at five different conferences / symposia, both in Japan and the UK. I have several other articles and book chapters in various stages of development. I have prepared the call for papers for the edited volume and it will be released through various academic mailing lists and networks in May, and the project website is also now under construction.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The research is progressing as planned with most objectives laid out to date being met. I have acquired a large amount of secondary source material and have conducted scoping visits to two archives and made contact with others in order to facilitate my visits later this year and next year.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
After a further few months of preparation I will begin my year abroad on sabbatical in the UK from September 2019. I already have at least one conference appearance scheduled in early September and expect to attend other symposia and events while I am in the UK in order to broaden my network, present my research findings and seek contributors to the project. I will also undertake the primary document capture phase while in the UK through visiting various archives and museums holding relevant material on the British troops present in Yokohama from circa 1861 to 1875.
I expect to receive a number of proposals for the edited volume and conference in Q3 this year and will begin screening and developing these. I will also create and share the dedicated website for the project later this year.
|
Causes of Carryover |
In AY 2019 I intend to use the amount requested to help me prepare for my move to the UK to begin the principal data capture period. I will mostly use the funds to acquire secondary source materials to read in preparation for interacting with the archival materials based in the UK.
