Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I have collected/am in the process of collecting material from the following archives/museums: Royal Norfolk Regimental Museum, Norwich; Royal Hampshire regiment Museum, Winchester; The National Archives, Kew; The Fusiliers Museum, Bury; Wiltshire and Swindon Archives, Chippenham; The Lincolnshire Archives, Lincoln.I have also made contact with the Japan desk at the Foreign Office and am arranging further interviews with British governmental contacts.
I have recruited my team for my planned edited book and work on it is progressing well. My chapter is also developing well. I have also conducted three research presentations, although others have been cancelled or delayed due to COVID-19.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The research is progressing as planned with most objectives laid out to date being met. I have acquired a large amount of secondary source material and have conducted visits to multiple archives and have begun to collect all the necessary material. I have made important government and academic contacts and the edited book project is progressing well. My own chapter for the book shows strong potential and I will look to ultimately expanding it into a full book length study.
My initial research presentations based directly on the outcomes of this project have been delayed slightly due to COVID-19 (conferences cancelled or delayed) but i will endeavor to conduct some of these digitally and prepare for a potentially larger event at Ritsumeikan in late 2021/very early 2022.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
During the remainder of my time in the UK (until September 2020) I will collect more secondary and primary material (the latter digitally as far as is possible) and begin doing more research presentations on the theme of my chapter in the edited volume and with the other contributors to that book.
