Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study was to clarify the response of the Japanese sports community to the recovery from the Great Kanto Earthquake (1923). Through the analysis of documents and historical records (documents, magazines, newspapers, etc.), the facts on the "application" submitted by the Japan Amateur Athletic Association (now the Japan Sports Association and the Japan Olympic Committee) to the Imperial Reconstruction Agency and Tokyo city authorities immediately after the earthquake, student's activities for reconstruction assistance and charity matches of various university athletic teams, as well as the It was revealed that "comfort athletic meets" were held in Ueno Park for disaster victims (mainly evacuees).

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究の学術的意義は、従来の日本体育史研究やスポーツ人類学研究に対し、震災復興と体育・スポーツの関連性という視点で新たな知見を提供したことにある。社会的意義については、特に東日本大震災(2011年)後に社会課題とされてきた「スポーツを通した震災復興」という論点に対し、約一世紀前の関東大震災(1923年)後の被災地(東京市を中心に)における歴史的事実をもって議論の材料を提示した点にあると考えられる。
