(1)18世紀植民地時代から独立革命を経て19世紀アンティベラム時代へと続く合衆国史を、一つの包括的視点から捉え、独立革命で分断される歴史像を修正する。
(2)公共文化の醸成という視点から、合衆国史を、ヨーロッパ史、アジア史との比較史的視野から相対化する。
