英語における音声放出動詞の移動用法に対する語彙・構文論的分析

| Research Abstract |
前年度までの研究で、音声放出動詞の移動用法には2種類あることが分かった。この2種類はmotion-describingタイプとmotion-inducedタイプという名称がふさわしく、さらに以下の点が判明した。
1. The trolley rumbled through the tunnel.のようなmotion-describingタイプは、The ball rolled down the hill.のような移動様態動詞と根本的に同じであり、移動がどのような様態で起こるかを描写している。Rollのようないわゆる移動様態動詞とmotion-describingタイプの違いは、様態を視覚的な情報で捉えるかそれとも音声で捉えるかの違いである。
2. The plane thudded into the earth.のようなmotion-inducedタイプでは、音声放出動詞が移動経路を含意しており、into the earthはその経路をさらに詳しく指定している。これは、enterという動詞が経路をその内在的意味の中に既に持っていて、He entered through the front door.においてthrough the front doorがその経路をさらに詳しく指定しているのと平行している。
3. このように2種類を認めることで、「音声事象が移動事象の結果生じる」というこれまでの一般化が厳密にはmotion-inducedタイプにしか当てはまらないことが分かった。また「人間が喉から出す音声では移動用法が不可」という一般化に対する反例(Ma Bombie wheezed up the hill towards them.)も、motion-describingタイプでは音声が様態と同じ役割を果たすと考えれば説明がつく。
