Research Abstract |
Kainic acid (KA) causes seizures and hippocampal neuron damage in the brain. In this study we found that KA also induces endothelial microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1 (mPGES-1) and prostaglandin E_2 (PGE_2) receptor EP3 on astrocytes. The PGE_2 produced by mPGES-1 stimulates the activation of EP3 on astrocytes, therefore causes the increase in intracellular Ca^<2+> in astrocytes and glutamate release, leading to the neuronal injury.
