Research Abstract |
In the rapidly changing context of the global political economy, the G8 summit can be a source of both conflict and cooperation. While the aristocratic nature of the G8 summit can check unilateralism and be a stepping-stone to multilateralism, it may also become a corrupt oligarchy. While more democratic governance can be constructed through the transformation of the G8 into a global governance forum with African and other outreach countries, and with civil society dialogue, the emerging G20 may play the hypocrite without fulfilling their commitments unless it is effectively democratized.
