Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Setting out to understand the impact of labor law reforms enacted in 2018, we sought to investigate the pre and post-reform working conditions of various categories of workers. COVID and severe injury to one of the project team members complicated our work. Nevertheless, we published papers and gave international conference presentations outlining the reform plan itself, and analyzed how struggles for equal pay for equal work progressed through Japan's courts, including the Supreme Court. Several papers are still in progress: on trucking and driving, on teaching, on physicians work hours, and on labor unions and the reforms. Some of our subject populations will not feel the full effect of the reforms until 2024, so our work will continue even after funding stops.
