Outline of Final Research Achievements

Awe is an emotional response to perceptually vast stimuli that transcend one's current frames of reference arises from perceptually aesthetic experiences. We created the Japanese version of the SAS using awe-inducing video clips, through three online surveys. In addition, we showed that awe evokes an increased sense of body ownership over the rubber hand and this effect was prominent among participants who experienced small self. Furthermore, using functional MRI, we found that both awe experiences of positive- and threat-awe deactivated the left middle temporal gyrus in contrast to control conditions.
Currently many leading global educational organizations (e.g., OECD, UNESCO) are seeking to measure the non-cognitive dimensions of learning and student well-being. However, the frameworks that they utilize are often narrowly Western n their starting assumptions. Aspects such as relational emotions, and emotions such as awe and ambiguity are rarely included in their measurement models.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
