Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging, coupled with machine learning to operate a small humanoid robot to give visual feedback of body coordinate representation, has enabled real-time classification of brain activation patterns that could represent performance of motor imagery. It was suggested that such neurofeedback (NF) training could be characterized by dynamic changes of activation patterns as the training progressed to estimate cognitive reserve (CR) in older adults. By employing updating of the used classifier every after feedback-scan to account for its temporal change, and combining with two-dimensional expansion of the classifier, 4 classes separation of the imagery movements (right/left, hand/foot) could be successfully demonstrated in both age groups. Detection and accuracy rate of imagery assignment in older subjects suggested that NF trainings are valid to evaluate CR for risk assessments in their daily life.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
