Outline of Final Research Achievements

I built the theoretical foundation necessary for a comprehensive historical description of the history of Japanese writing and notation, which has not yet been developed, and organized the historical facts that should be described.When describing the extremely complex history of Japanese notation, it is difficult to understand the relationship between notation style and writing style.By analyzing the history of Japanese writing from the perspective of the history of the relationship between kanji and kana, this study shows that when describing Japanese writing languages, it is necessary to first distinguish between Kana written languages and Knaji written languages. Now that the theoretical foundations have been established, I have reached the stage where it is expected that a comprehensive historical description of the history of Japanese writing and notation will be completed that is logically consistent.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

歴史的研究の正しい発展には、通史記述がどうしても必要であるが、日本語文字・表記史に関してはこれまでそれが成されていなかった。本研究の成果により、その実現に必要な基盤が整備された。また、より上位の研究領域としての日本語書記言語史の構想が可能となり、その中における文字・表記史の位置づけも明らかとなった。更に、日本語の書記言語化、殊に和文系書記言語の方法による書記言語化には地域的格差が大きく存在していたことが明らかとなり、列島の文字生活史という観点から日本語文字・表記史記述を精密化する、という新たな研究課題も明らかとなった。これらは、将来のあるべき日本語表記を議論する際の基礎ともなりうるものである。
