Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
While the project has been impacted by by the novel coronavirus and prohibitions on face-to-face contact and regular interactions with students, significant progress has been made. Using data collected with the Empatica E4 wristband, the the Situation Specific Arousal Analyzer (SSAA) application, available for both OS X and Windows, has been designed to support non-clinical research and analysis into the physiological measurement and tracking of autonomic nervous system arousal with a focus on state specific anxiety within the context of foreign language education. The app has been tested under various test conditions although large scale face-to-face student data has not yet been possible to obtain due to local prohibitions relating to the novel coronavirus. In order to further promote and share the outcomes of the project, a project specific website has been created (www.ssaa.online). This website has attracted interest in the app from international colleagues and collaborators. A peer-reviewed research article has been published based on the necessity for physiological data to be used in assessments of foreign language speaking anxiety and the solutions provided by the SSAA app. Additional research has been undertaken and published exploring the impact of stress, personality and self-regulation on grade achievement within university online courses.
