Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I have collected writing center research data. I conducted 9 interviews with writing center students and 9 interviews with writing center tutors. I have collected multiple drafts of the student writing and am in the process of analyzing this data. I have visited ICU Secondary School Writing Center and collected documents and interviewed the teacher that founded the center. I have also given two presentations, one in Japan and one in the USA connected with this data collection.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I have been proactive in implementing my research design and gathering data. In the Spring term of 2019 I applied for the conferences I presented at while collecting data. I have done a great deal of reading and research on writing centers, and been able to utilize professional connections in the field to facilitate my progress. I have also been given excellent support from my institution, Sophia University, in administrating research trips and gathering data.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, presenting at conferences and visiting writing centers could prove problematic. For this reason I intend to focus on writing up the research I have completed so far and submitting it for publication. I intend to apply for to present this research at conferences held in February/March 2021. I will also attempt to visit university writing centers in Japan when the pandemic is over.

Causes of Carryover |
I will be buying books, software, and other hardware such as a microphone. I will also be traveling to conferences later in the year and conducting research in Japan that will incur travel and transcription costs. In addition there could be publication costs as well. This said, due to the pandemic, this project my have to be extended for another year, and while costs might be lower funds will be needed for the final extended year.
