Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Due to travel restrictions the global pandemic has halted several aspects of my research into the applicability of English writing centers in Japanese secondary education. However, the subsequent shift towards online learning has also provided insights and opportunities. It has also illuminated potential solutions to many of the issues related to introducing writing centers into Japanese high schools. My experience creating a virtual writing at Sophia University see http://www.flawritingcenter.org/ has provided me with several insights as to the efficacy of online or virtual writing centers. I also co-authored a paper on the subjec; see the Harwood, C., & Koyama, D. (2020) reference below.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The technological affordances of hosting writing centers in Zoom can enhance dialogic interaction, and, with the appropriate writing center ethos, can increase student ownership of tutorials and bolster the perceived effectiveness of writing center visits for students. My experience creating a virtual writing at Sophia University see http://www.flawritingcenter.org/ has provided me with several insights as to the efficacy of online or virtual writing centers. I also co-authored a paper on the subject; see the Harwood, C., & Koyama, D. (2020). Creating a virtual writing center to support self-regulated learning.
