Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study contributes to the clarification of the sermon production and circulation in mendicant orders in the late Middle Ages. Intellectual exchange between religious orders has been overlooked because the study of sermons has been conducted separately for each order. This study reveals the fact that the sermons of prominent Italian preachers not only circulated within Italy but were “exported” also to other areas in Europe and were referred to at the grassroots level as “common property” among different mendicant orders, and that they were also copied and referenced in various ways outside the mendicant orders (other religious orders, secular clergy). The research was based on an examination of unpublished manuscripts and early printed books. The results of this study also include the discovery of a new manuscript of sermons by Roberto da Lecce, a prominent Franciscan preacher.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
