Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study aimed at exploring internal and qualitative factors that enhance or prohibit learners’motivation for world history learning through questionnaire and interviews. The results show that the respondents’interest in foreign countries was affected by various factors such as TV programmes, video games, cartoon film, sports, study overseas, and communication with friends and teachers. It has become clear that international posture that is created from individual life stories influence greatly on the efforts for world history learning.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

日本の若者がどのようにして世界史（外国史）に興味を持つ/失うのか、その内発的動機の解明はこれまで十分行われてこなかった。各人のライフヒストリー全体を通じて生じる国際的志向性が、そこに大きな影響を及ぼしているとする本研究の成果は、若者のいわゆる「世界史離れ」が進む中、世界史教育を立て直していく上で有益な知見となると思われる。
