Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study aimed to conduct an interdisciplinary review of the ethical and legal issues related to the safe use of humanoid caring robots that can provide conversational care in nursing settings by experts in the fields of medicine, nursing, engineering, and law. We observed conversations between elderly patients with dementia in a long-term healthcare facility and older adults using day care services with Pepper, which was equipped with rehabilitation and interactive applications. At present,it is difficult to achieve sufficient interaction with the subject, and a caregiver is necessary for conversations between the robot and the elderly person. When introducing robots into clinical practice, the size and shape of the robot must be considered from a safety perspective.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

コミュニケーションロボットの開発は進んでいるが，医療や看護の現場で活用するためには対象者を配慮した対話機能が必要となる．人型ロボットPepperを用いることで，対象者は親しみやすさを感じた．一方，施設スタッフは準備や操作の際，負担が大きく，安全面への配慮も必要であった．リハビリやレクリエーションといった限定したケアにおいては有効であった．現時点において大きな法的事象は生じていないが，日本の法律改正においては事象の積み重ねが必要になるため，活用状況や課題を今後も検討し，使用におけるガイドラインを作成する必要がある．
