Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Previously,I found that thiozolidine 4-carboxylic acid (TCA) can promote the generation of organic compounds under electrochemical conditions in presence of CO2. I confirmed the origin of these organics by isotope labeled CO2, however, no 13C-labeled products were observed. I discussed the results with geochemists in our institute, and we came into an idea that electrochemical alteration of amino acids could occur and contribute to the generation of amines, carboxylic acids on the icy plantesimals (parent bodies of carbonaceous chondrites).I studied the reactivity of model amino acids (glycine, valine, and alanine) under electrochemical conditions using iron sulfide and nickel sulfide as the catalysts. This opens up a new research area in geo-electrochemistry field.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Although the results are not as expected in the original proposal, I learned knowledge from geochemistry field and started a new interdisciplinary project, which is geo-electrochemistry in the icy parent body of carbonaceous chondrites. The results have been submitted and now under revision.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
To better understand the effect of geo-electrochemical alteration on the organic distribution on the carbonaceous chondrites with different aqueous alteration degrees, the following research is planned for the next year: 1) The reacivity of amino acids with different side chains will be studied; 2) the reactivity of C5 amino acids with different amino positions will be studied.

Causes of Carryover |
In the next year, the budget will be used for the following research plan: 1) purchasing chemicals(including gas) for catalyst synthesis and electrochemical experiments; 2) purchasing columns, consumables for chemical analyses (HPLC, NMR)
