Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I designed and tested the stimulus materials neccessary for the experiment. Validated the equipment. Started data collection for the first experiment. Data collection is 95% completed. Due to the pandemic, data collection is stopped at the moment until further notice. The preliminary results of this experiment were presented at an impactful symposium held at Kwansei Gakuin University in March 2020. I attended the American Psychology Law Conference 2020 in New Orleans to discuss the application of the Forced Choice Test (FCT) with clinical practitioners. I met with forensic specialist from the Japanese police to discuss the practical applications of the FCT in December 2019.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Data collection of the first experiment went well, but is currently on hold due to the COVID19 crisis. Some of the results from the first study are unexpected and require discussion with other experts in the field and more sophisticated data analysis methods. The transfer to the FCT paradigm has led to additional behavioural differences in response time between conditions and response times were much longer than in previous experiments. This may have resulted in problems with observing a clear MFN. A follow-up experiment is needed.
Due to the current crisis, it is difficult to predict how quickly the outstanding tasks can be completed. I already designed several follow-up experiments and construction of their materials and code is in progress.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Some findings were unexpected and follow-up experiments are required. The purpose of these followup experiments is to verify my previous findings and expand the use of ERP indices (P300, Feedback Related Negativity) and indices of the autonomous nervous system (Heart rate, Skin Conductance Response) in the FCT to detect concealed knowledge or malingered cognitive performance.
Due to the COVID19 crisis, it may be difficult to test many participants in person. I am considering to conduct an additional online questionnaire about response strategies and other behavioural phenomena in the FCT while data collection in the laboratory is prohibited due to safety concerns.
It is unclear when and where I can present the results of this project. All conferences are postponed to 2021 or later.

Causes of Carryover |
Due to the COVID19 crisis, I made some changes to the design to compensate for the current situation. Therefore not all requested funds were used this year.
The remaining funds will be used to afford additional equipment for psychophysiological recordings and software to allow for a continuation of this research line in the future, paying subjects to participate in experiments in the laboratory or online (possibly Amazon mTurk), (if possible) attending domestic and international conferences to disseminate the findings, hire a research assisstant to aid in data collection, and publication costs.
