Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The research project stated to achieve two main objective which are to obtain cellulose through green methods and production of antimicrobial packaging materials using cellulose obtained from rice husk. In the first objective, cellulose was successfully obtained using combination of green methods of NaOH and weak acid pretreatment and the cellulose obtained was compared with the commercial solvent used which is using chlorinated methods. The cellulose obtained using green methods was smaller particle in size as compared to chlorinated methods and current experiment focus on the production of cellulose sheet for packaging materials.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The cellulose materials was successfully obtained from the proposed green methods using green acids. The particle size of the cellulose was not suitable for producing cellulose sheet and experiment was still continue to produce the cellulose sheets with satisfactory mechanical properties for packaging purposes using various of solvent.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
After successful obtained the cellulose, the cellulose materials will be converted into cellulose sheets particularly to meet the satisfactory quality of packaging materials in term of mechanical properties. The analysis of tensile, thermal degradation and functional properties of the cellulose sheets will be carried out. The additional antimicrobial properties experiment will be conducted to enhance the quality of the cellulose sheets obtained using gram positive and gram negative bacteria to see the effect of microbial attached on the surface of the cellulose sheet.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The amount will be used for production of cellulose sheets that required more chemicals and consumables for analysis. More rice fiber will be required during this stage for production of high amount of cellulose therefore, certain amount will be allocated for feedstock. As the results obtained will be satisfactory and sufficient to be be presented during conference, the amount of money will be used for conference fees, transportation and accommodations. Some of the analysis will be conducted in private laboratory and allocation for professional services will be required. In the 2nd objective, an appointment of enumerator is necessary to carried out laborious analysis especially for antimicrobial analysis and analysis of mechanical properties of different quality of cellulose sheets obtained.
