Outline of Final Research Achievements

Almost all through the period of this JSPS research project, with differences in countermeasures between Japan and the UK, undeniably the COVID-19 disaster affected our research programs to no small extent. Nevertheless, we sought for collaborative research activities by online meetings and it turned out that the planned goals were largely achieved with open online meetings in which the overseas joint researcher participated.
For the subjects of this project, in particular, by setting the perspective of the third force in art history, we came to consider it as a comprehensive category, instead of viewing it as a peripheral existence such as patrons, collectors, mecenas and arriere-guard against avant-garde, which were previously seen as individual phenomena. By considering it as a research object, it became more possible to approach the dynamics of art history more.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

美術史の形成については、美術家と美術作品が中心に記述される。一概に否定されないが、歴史の実相に照らしてみるならば、とうぜん作品の生成にさまざまな要因が作用している。その要因、とくに人的な交流を重視して、たとえばパトロンや収集家といった属性ではなく、サードフォース、つまり第三の勢力として考察する視点を設定することで、美術史の周辺とみられる現象を有力な項目として算入することができる。とくに日英美術交流については従来の研究も手薄であり、また第一次世界大戦後に顕著になるが、パリ在住日本人における美術家の大きな割合と好対照で、ロンドン在住日本人にはビジネス関係者が多く、その影響の検証の意義がある。
